We just want our dogs to have somewhere comfortable to lie down.
It shouldn’t be this hard.
But when we’re living with a dog who’s tough on bedding, even that simple wish can turn into a frustrating compromise. Something soft enough to be inviting, but not vulnerable to teeth. Something tougher, but without water sitting on the surface. Something washable, that doesn’t take the whole day to dry.
It doesn’t feel like a complex list we’re looking for in a better bed.
That’s the part that wears us down.
We’re trying to look after the dog we love, yet everything we bought so far keeps creating another job—or another expense.
I want us to be able to enjoy the swim without dreading the soggy bedding afterwards. To offer a comfortable resting spot on a warm day. To wash the bed and get on with life, without wondering whether it will survive the dog once it’s clean.
That’s the problem ChewProof Pro-Mesh beds are built to solve: a durable, raised mesh dog bed that combines airflow and drainage with easier upkeep.
Because caring for our dogs should leave plenty of room for enjoying them too.
Comfort for our dog – Should not mean hard work for us
There’s a particularly deflating sight: a perfectly good bed sitting empty while the dog sleeps on the tiles beside it.
We’ve been there, choosing a padded bed because it looked comfortable. They’ve voted for the floor.
An owner in this Australian Dogz Online discussion describes a puffy bed their dog disliked and left unused. It’s a useful reminder that adding softness doesn’t necessarily give our dogs what they’re looking for.
For dogs who prefer an open resting surface, Pro-Mesh offers a suspended (Hammock style) mat without thick padding underneath. They have somewhere to stretch out, with space for air to circulate below them.
When the weather warms up, airflow matters
We want them resting comfortably. A dense cushion may be the last place they choose on a warm afternoon.
Veterinarian Dr Karen Hedberg’s Dogs Australia guidance emphasises ventilation, shade and water. Pro-Mesh lets air pass through the sleeping surface, giving us a breathable option for a suitable shaded resting spot.
It isn’t air-conditioning. The RSPCA’s heatstroke advice still applies: a cool, well-ventilated environment and drinking water are essential.
But we can stop assuming that more padding must mean more comfort. For the right dog, an airy mesh surface is a better fit—and the bed finally has a reason to be there.

Let the dog enjoy the water – Without the bed holding it
The swim is the good bit. The wet bed afterwards? Less charming.
We bring home a happy dog, give them somewhere to settle, and end up with bedding that holds the water beneath them. Now we’re moving beds, reaching for towels and finding another dry spot.
The outing is over. The work isn’t.
Pro-Mesh gives water a route through the mat. There’s no stuffed centre soaking it up, and no solid sleeping surface for it to pool on.
That’s more than just useful after swimming, baths, beach trips or a very committed rendition of singing in the rain and puddle inspection.
The most recent mat we replaced on the bed by the pool was four years old. Out with the old mat and insert the new… 10 minutes and the bed was like new. That’s our experience, rather than a promised lifespan for every dog, but it does capture what I want this bed to deliver: less fuss over the bedding and more freedom to enjoy life with the dog.
A bed that is washable is only half the answer
The other half is what washing it demands of us.
Will it fit in the machine? Can we get the cover back on? Is the middle still damp even though the outside feels dry? Is it safe to wash this mat with just about any detergent?

Owners in this Dogz Online conversation describe bulky bedding, awkward washing and slow drying. These are the small, repetitive frustrations that make a supposedly comfortable bed uncomfortable to own.
With Pro-Mesh, we can clean the mat and hose it down. There’s no filling to wring out or wrestle back into shape. Simply wipe it down or leave it 10 minutes in the sun… It’s dry nearly instantly.
It still needs cleaning. The difference is that cleaning becomes a simple job, rather than an event requiring half the day and the washing line.
When regular washing is unavoidable
Some of us have several dogs. Some have one dog who brings home enough dirt for several.
Either way, waiting on a soggy bed gets old quickly. Fast drainage and drying help us get the resting surface back into use after cleaning.
David Draper of Fido and Felix Pet Resort says ChewProof beds “drain well and dry quickly”. That matters in a busy kennel, and it matters when we’re trying to get our own dog settled before dinner.
Kennels and rescues still need their proper cleaning and disinfection routines. Drainage makes the practical work easier; it doesn’t replace hygiene.
When their comfort is already worrying us
An itchy dog struggling to settle is hard to watch. We want to help, but the care routine can already involve enough work without bedding becoming another obstacle.
Greencross Vets identifies possible triggers including pollens, dust mites and mould. Finding the cause with the vet matters.
Pro-Mesh’s contribution is practical: a surface we can wash and rinse as part of that care. It isn’t an allergy treatment or an allergen-free material. If skin sensitivity is the main concern, I’d discuss the vet’s bedding advice and our smooth Pro-Tough option before choosing.

The aim is to make looking after them easier, without promising that a bed can do the vet’s job.
Accidents change the routine, not how we feel about the dog
When a dog starts leaking urine while resting, we still want them close and comfortable. But repeated wet bedding can add a lot of washing—and worry—to the day.
Veterinary nurse Gillian Shippen discusses flow-through mesh bedding for incontinent pets. Allowing liquid through can help when there’s suitable collection underneath and prompt cleaning of the dog, mat and surrounding area.
Pro-Mesh isn’t a specialist continence system. The vet can help decide whether it suits the dog’s mobility, cushioning needs and care. Greencross recommends veterinary assessment of incontinence, so we address the cause as well as the clean-up.
Where mesh is appropriate, easier cleaning means one less difficult part of caring for a dog who needs us.
A dry resting spot when the ground is damp

Sometimes the dog is dry. It’s the verandah after rain, freshly washed run or ground underneath the bed that’s the problem.
We shouldn’t have to keep relocating their resting spot just because the floor is damp.
Pro-Mesh raises the sleeping surface off the ground and lets water reaching the mat drain through. We can give our dogs a place beside us without laying their bedding directly onto wet paving.
Animal Welfare League SA recommends warm, dry bedding raised off the ground, with protection from the weather. Elevation helps with separation from damp ground; bare mesh doesn’t supply winter warmth. Appropriate shelter and bedding for the conditions remain essential.
For warm-weather outdoor living, that combination of elevation, airflow and drainage is useful. Our dog has somewhere to settle. We can stop fussing with the bed.
Easy to live with still has to mean tough enough
None of this helps much if we’re replacing the mesh next week.
After a few failed purchases, another “tough” label deserves a raised eyebrow. An owner on r/AustralianPets asks for a bed that lasts longer than 24 hours. There’s a whole bedding budget in that sentence.
So what makes Pro-Mesh different?
ToughMesh is selected for abrasion resistance as well as airflow and drainage. The mats are manufactured in Australia, heat-welded and double-stitched. Their edges sit inside the anodised aluminium frame, reducing the accessible fabric edges a dog can get started on.
The mesh has 15-year UV protection. That refers to the material’s UV protection, rather than a 15-year mat lifespan or protection for the dog from the sun.
Mats, feet and corners are replaceable. When a component wears out, we can replace that part instead of buying an entire new bed.
That’s the value I’d compare with cheaper mesh: how it’s built, what upkeep it asks of us, and whether we can keep it working. A lower purchase price loses its appeal when it keeps sending us back to the checkout.
Finally, a bed that fits the life we share
Pro-Mesh is my recommendation when airflow, drainage and easier cleaning matter, and our dog is hard on ordinary bedding.
But I don’t recommend it for a powerful dog that persistently scratches or digs at the sleeping surface. That needs a different answer. Start with Pro-Tough, or explore Extreme and our article about dogs that destroy every bed for exceptional destruction.
For indoor cushioning, look at Comfort. Compare Classic and the other styles in our five-bed selection guide. Getting the fit right is how we stop repeating the same frustrating purchase.
Pro-Mesh has a 100-day damage mat guarantee, with one replacement under the terms; digging is included. Register within 30 days for extended 10-year frame cover, otherwise the standard three-year warranty applies.
Measure your dog in their usual sleeping position and choose Small, Medium, Large, XL or Giant. Unsure? Tell us about your dog and we’ll help you choose.
We wanted somewhere comfortable for them to rest. We deserve to feel comfortable with the choice too.
Choose your Pro-Mesh bed—and let the next stretch and sigh of relief be yours.
